It's been nearly three weeks since Joey Feek passed away after a courageous battle with cervical cancer. While her husband and family adjust to life without her, the blessings keep rolling in. It was announced yesterday that Joey+Rory's final album, Hymns That Are Important To Us, tops the Billboard Top Country Albums chart for the second week in a row.
Joey, prior to receiving her terminal cancer diagnosis in October, set out to fulfill her long-time dream of recording a hymns album. Joey fought through the side effects of surgery and cancer treatments to record the album, truly making it a labor of love.
"We recorded it in a studio in Nashville early in the summer – just after recovering from her first big surgery in Chicago. And then she did her vocals where she could… in hotel rooms, our house, wherever and whenever she felt up to singing," Rory wrote in November. "In early October, we even did a tv taping of the songs in the concert hall at our farm in front of a live audience. Joey was weak and it was difficult for her, but she was determined. This record means so much to her. It is the songs that are the most important to her."
Hymns That Are Important To Us, was released in early February just two days before the couple celebrated their first Grammy nomination. The album was an instant success with Cracker Barrel, who was selling exclusive deluxe editions, unable to keep copies on the shelf. So, it's no surprise that for the second week in a row, Joey+Rory's Hymns That Are Important To Us tops the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The duo's album surpassed Chris Stapleton's Traveller, Sam Hunt's Montevallo, and the much-anticipated new release from Loretta Lynn, Full Circle.
We're sure that Joey never anticipated the success of her final album, but it has turned into a sweet gift and unexpected blessing for her loved ones who want her song to live on.
On April 3, Joey+Rory are up for the Academy of Country Music's Vocal Duo of the Year award. They are nominated alongside Brothers Osborne, Dan+Shay, Florida Georgia Line and Maddie & Tae. The 2016 ACM Awards will broadcast live on April 3 from Las Vegas on CBS at 8PM ET.
