The Hag built himself a legacy through country music and made an honest living from it. Although he lost his father at an early age, he revealed that his old man left an impression on him. 

In 1945, Merle's father passed from a brain hemorrhage and that was a hard time for the future singer. He was only 9 years old at the time. 

In an interview with Men's Journal, Haggard admits that the best advice he'd picked up came from his father. 

"My father hated a liar. He died when I was nine, but if I learned anything from him, I learned that.
