5. "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" (1977)

A song that catapulted Crystal Gayle into stardom, this ballad was easily one of the decade's biggest hits and the most successful single of her career.

This Grammy-winning super-hit was born from the same partnership with composer Richard Leigh, that saw several of her songs hit the Top Ten on the Country & Western chart.

During the recording, Gayle nailed the track on the first take, but the success came so quickly, that she wasn't certain she'd done her best job and insisted on running a few more recordings. Ultimately, Gayle agreed that the first take was stunning and that original first-take was issued on her album.
