While on tour for her 1990 album, eight of McEntire's band members were killed in a plane crash and McEntire was beyond devastated.
She felt she could only turn to a person who had been through a tragedy like this to help her get through it. Early in his career, Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the flight that ultimately ended Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson's lives.
Jennings encouraged McEntire not to feel guilty and to not blame herself. She also credits Vince Gill as another important person in getting her back on the stage to perform and eventually, dedicate her sixteenth album, For My Broken Heart, to her deceased band members.
