Country fans were shocked when news broke on Thursday (May 12) that the popular ABC television series Nashville is being cancelled. Fans took the news extra hard, since ABC network president Paul Lee told reporters mere months ago that a Nashville cancellation wasn't even a thought.
"We don't have any plans to finish Nashville," he told EW at the time. "The Nashville audience grows by a large amount in our delay viewings. No, at this point, no plans for Nashville other than to keep it going."
Now, the season four finale, which is set to air on May 25, will serve as the show's series finale. Many fans expressed their heartbreak over the news and the fact that some of their favorite characters' storylines may not be wrapped up.
Following the news, Nashville's cast took to social media to express their own thoughts over the cancellation of the show that had been a major part of their lives.
Sister duo Lennon & Maisy, who played main character Rayna Jaymes' daughters on the show, wrote a heartfelt message about their time on the show.Charles Esten, who played Deacon Claybourne, expressed his gratefulness for being able to get to know his character over the years.
So grateful to so many for the dream that has been #Nashville. Not always easy to be Deacon. But to play him? An absolute joy and an honor.— Charles Esten (@CharlesEsten) May 13, 2016
Aubrey Peoples, who played Layla Grant, expressed more regret in her post than some of her other cast mates, saying she wished the whole thing had been "handled with more care."
I'm so thankful I was a part of a special show; I wish it was handled with more care. thank you to every fan who kept us going #Nashville— Aubrey Peeples (@aubreypeeples) May 13, 2016
Will Chase, who played the character Luke Wheeler, thanked all of his fans for their support over the years. He also wished all of the new ABC shows the best of luck on their own journeys.
We're still trying to wrap our heads around the fact that Nashville is really done for good. The cast has provided us with so many wonderful moments and equally wonderful music. You can watch them perform in the video below.
