Glen Campbell released "Gentle On my Mind" in 1967 as the sole single from his album of the same name.
It became the theme song for his variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour from 1969-1972.
The song won Campbell two Grammy Awards for the Best Country and Western Solo Vocal Performance, Male and Best Country and Western Recording.
"Gentle On My Mind" was originally written and recorded by John Hartford, but has been covered by many talented musicians, most famously by Campbell.
Campbell first heard Hartford's version on the radio and knew he needed to record it. At the time, he had a recording contract with Capital Records, but wasn't too famous in the public eye yet.
He got his band together in the studio to record "Gentle On my Mind" as a demo to pitch to his producer. In between stanzas and lyrics, he would yell instructions to the band members. Turns out, the producer absolutely loved the recording, so he just took out Campbell's instructions and released it. The rest is history!
