Known for his bluegrass storytelling and incredible contribution to music, the longtime favorite in the bluegrass community, James King passed away earlier today, May 19th.
King became well known with bluegrass fans in the 80s when working alongside Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys and although he was never an official band member, King became one of the few to receive an "honorary" status. This was an accomplishment that he held close to his heart for many years.
King was a huge proponent for bluegrass artists like the Stanley Brothers, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs among many more. In 2014, King received a Grammy nomination for his album, Three Chords and the Truth and shortly after was inducted into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame.
All-in-all, King was one of the best bluegrass musicians to ever grace us with his music and the entire country community is saddened by his passing.
Fellow bluegrass musician, Rhonda Vincent, posted an update on Facebook expressing her deepest condolences and promising to honor the legend on the famed Opry stage during her set - a beautiful way to remember someone who meant so much to her!
King passed away at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia from complications associated to a long battle with liver disease.
He will be truly missed.
