Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and two of Merle Haggard's sons took the stage at Atlanta's Chastain Park Amphitheater last night, but fans were in for a surprise when another special guest showed up. Merle Haggard was initially slated to share the stage with Willie in Atlanta, but after Haggard's death in April, Kris Kristofferson and two of Haggard's sons, Ben and Noel, stepped up to fill in.
Kristofferson opened the show, but found the spotlight shifted from his set when Presidential couple Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter shocked the crowd of 6,500 as they made their way to their front row seats a few minutes into the opening set. The moment was captured by Ben Haggard who shared a photo of the couple on Instagram with a caption that read "The moment president jimmy carter walks in while you are singing and sits down right in front of ya and cracks open a beer.."
According to witnesses, the couple rose to their feet when Willie Nelson took the stage and stood throughout most of Willie's set. When Willie started singing his hit song "Georgia on My Mind", a spotlight found the Carters smiling and singing along.
The night closed with a moment that won't soon be forgotten. Willie Nelson invited 91-year old President Carter to join him on stage for 'Amazing Grace.' Watch a clip of the moment below.
