Throughout his career, Billy Ray Cyrus has released his fair share of emotional songs, but none compares to his 2008 single “Somebody Said a Prayer.” As the lead single off of his album Back to Tennessee, “Somebody Said a Prayer” further cemented Billy Ray’s place in music history when it peaked at the 33rd spot on the Billboard country chart.

Written by Neil Thrasher and Craig Wiseman, the song tells the emotional story of a mother and son who are both experiencing heartbreak. The mother eventually becomes so stressed she lets her “whole life go up in smoke,” while her son goes so far as to attempt suicide by taking a bottle of pills.

Luckily, this story has a happy ending. Both mother and son find peace all because “somebody said a prayer.” Thanks to the power of prayer, they were able to move on and discover the happiness they once had in life.

Billy Ray’s music video for the song continues the emotional message in the lyrics. The video depicts a mother of three whose husband passed away. Her youngest son navigates through the house filled with mourners, and sees how heartbroken his mother and siblings are.

While walking around the house, he also comes across his big brother, who is sitting in his room contemplating suicide. The young boy’s older brother is played by someone close to Billy Ray, his son Trace, who is also a musician.

In the end, the young boy gets down on his knees and says a prayer, which ends up bringing peace to his entire family. They all come into the room to join him, and share a hopeful embrace with one another.

Billy Ray’s honest delivery is what gives “Somebody Said a Prayer” its emotional punch. His voice soars through each an every word, making for a beautiful work of art.

When it comes to prayers, Billy Ray is going to be saying plenty as the character Burnin’ Vernon in his upcoming show for CMT called Still the King. After getting out of jail, Burnin’ Vernon finds himself posing as the local priest, and hilarity ensues. Be sure to tune in to the show when it debuts on CMT on June 12, and check out the trailer here in the meantime.
