Originally, Houston had planned on covering Jim Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" for The Bodyguard. But when they discovered the song had recently been used in another film, they decided to pick something different.

That's when Costner suggested Parton's "I Will Always Love You," and brought in Ronstadt's version for Houston to listen to. Like so many people before her, Houston was hooked on the song, and she decided to record it instead.

Houston's version became her signature hit, and topped the charts in multiple countries around the world.
