Keith Whitley knew just how to record a hit! Taken from this world way too soon, he left behind timeless country songs that'll never fade. Though his signature song is no doubt "When You Say Nothing At All", "Don't Close Your Eyes", an emotional rollercoaster of a song, is right up there as well.

Written by Bob McDill, "Don't Close Your Eyes" was released in 1988 on Keith Whitley's album of the same title. It rocketed to the #1 spot in the U.S. and #2 in Canada, and continued until it ultimately became the #1 single of 1988. It has been covered by Alan Jackson, Kellie Pickler, and it was also performed on The Voice by Jake Worthington. The song tells the unfortunate tale of a man whose lover still longs for her ex. He longs for the day that she'll stop pretending he's her former lover.

Keith Whitley really pours his heart and soul into this song. You can almost feel the sadness that emanates from his vocals, squeezing at your heart. He really was a one-of-a-kind country artist and is sincerely missed by everyone who has been touched by his fantastic songs.

Watch as Whitley gives what would be his very last performance on "Opry Live" in the video below!

LYRICS BELOW

I know you loved him
A long time ago
Even now in my arms
You still want him I know
But darling this time
Let your memories die
When you hold me tonight
Don't close your eyes

Don't close your eyes
Let it be me
Don't pretend it's him
In some fantasy
Darling just once
Let yesterday go
You'll find more love
Than you've ever known
Just hold me tight
When you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

Maybe I've been a fool
Holding on all this time
Lyin' here in your arms
Knowing he's in your mind
But I keep hoping some day
That you'll see the light
Let it be me tonight
Don't close your eyes

Don't close your eyes
Let it be me
Don't pretend it's him
In some fantasy
Darling just once
Let yesterday go
You'll find more love
Than you've ever known
Just hold me tight
When you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

Don't close your eyes
Let it be me
Don't pretend it's him
In some fantasy
Darling just once
Let yesterday go
You'll find more love
Than you've ever known
Just hold me tight
When you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

Just hold me tight
When you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes
