In the ultra relatable song, the two sing the story of two people longing for a love of the past every time they feel lonely at night. The couple breaks down time and time again and run back into the arms of their ex even though they know it's not right.
The music video for "Lonely Tonight" depicts Monroe in a car on her way to Shelton's hotel, succumbing to the loneliness of the night many people going through a breakup often agonize with. The video ends with the two back in each other's arms for a bittersweet "one last time."
"When the sun comes up, we can both move on," they sing together. "But we don't have to be lonely tonight."
"Lonely Tonight" was featured on Shelton's eighth studio album Bringing Back the Sunshine in 2014. The song hit No.1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart and was certified gold.
