There's no denying the impact that Merle Haggard has left on country music, and because of that he's gone on to inspire his youngest son, Ben to continue his musical legacy.

At age 21, Ben is an aspiring singer and a talented guitarist. He's already been performing with his dad's band, The Strangers, for six years, and currently serves as the band's lead guitarist.

On his Facebook page, Ben cites some of his greatest musical influences as Roy Nichols, who served as Merle's lead guitarist for over 20 years,  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist James Burton, and of course, Merle himself.

Because Ben has such an admiration for his father, he's covered many of his songs before, including "Sing Me Back Home," and "Mama Tried." At the age of 17, Ben also tried his hand at another one of his dad's songs, performing an acoustic cover of "I Wish Things Were Simple Again."

Merle originally released "I Wish Things Were Simple Again" in 1985 off of his live album Amber Waves of Grain. The song was never released as a single, but it's clear that it's one of Ben's favorites, as he delivers a touching performance of the song.

You can watch Ben's cover of his father's song, "I Wish Things Were Simple Again" in the video below.

Merle must be so proud of his boy!

LYRICS BELOW

I wish things were simple like they used to be
When cowboys rode horses, and were heroes to me
My Mother was a lady, and my Dad was a man
And I wish things were simple again

I wish things were simple, like when I was a kid
A man just got paid for the work that he did
And a song could be played for a nickel back then
And I wish things were simple again

But even the blue skies roar with thunder
Men fly above like birds
Nothin' is simple, not even a love song
The story gets lost in the words

But there's no way to rewind, it's gone with the wind
And I wish things were simple again

Even the blue skies roar with thunder
Men fly above like birds
Nothin' is simple, not even a love song
The story gets lost in the words

There's no way to rewind, it's gone with the wind
And I wish things were simple again
Oh, I wish things were simple again
