We found that out after Jackson had already become a famous country singer, but he was a huge fan way before that.
When he and his wife, Denise, first moved to Nashville, he got a job at The Nashville Network working in the mailroom and holding cue cards. Fortunately, he had a chance to sing on the show he was working on, You Can Be A Star.
Before a commercial break, the young and then-unknown Alan Jackson sang a tidbit of his hero George Jones' most famous song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today".
This was the first time anyone had seen him perform, including country music producer Keith Stegall. Fast forward a few years and Stegall was producing Alan Jackson albums and the rest is history!
Take a look at Jackson's first-ever appearance on national television below.
He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind.
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again.
He kept some letters by his bed
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you.
I went to see him just today
Oh, but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years.
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today.
