Following tremendous success in rock 'n roll, country, pop, blues, and others - one of the biggest legends in music history returned to his gospel roots for a final showcase.
Elvis Presley's rendition of the centuries-old hymn, "Amazing Grace", was released as a contemporary song both adapted and arranged by the singer for his third gospel album in 1972. He Touched Me would come to be Presley's final gospel album, released just five years before his untimely passing.
Although not released as a single, Elvis' rendition of "Amazing Grace" has been a notable variant of the traditional hymn. Written in 1779 by an English poet, John Newton, the song exclaims about salvation, forgiveness, and redemption for past sins with the mercy of God saving the soul. The song was associated with varying melodies, but the one most recognizable didn't accompany the hymn until 1835.
Elvis' return to gospel had proven to be an excellent choice for the singer. From his three albums in that genre, Presley achieved notable successes and even hit the top of the charts with singles like "Surrender".
