It seems fitting that

Reba McEntire, the rodeo-raised Oklahoman, would join forces with fellow country songstress Barbara Mandrell on the classic I Was Country (When Country Wasn't Cool)

The hit was originally coined by songwriters Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan in 1981 as a duet for Barbara and  George JonesThat same year, Barbara received Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association, and the track was certified gold.

Barbara and Reba have a rural upbringing in common, as well as a strong personal connection with the story told in this song. Reba stated about her appeal to the song's message:

"As a woman, working on the cattle range, you don't complain, you work twice as hard and you do your job ... [that] helped me with the music..."

Reba, who has been a longtime admirer and close friend of Barbara, was asked to join forces with Kenny Chesney for a remake of the hit on an album sharing the same title.
Check out this throwback video of Barbara and Reba in their element, on horseback, just like them good ol' days when "country wasn't cool"!

LYRICS

I remember wearin' straight leg Levis and flannel shirts, even when they weren't in style
I remember singin' with Roy Rogers at the movies, when the West was really wild
And I was listenin' to the Opry when all of my friends were diggin'
Rock 'n Roll and Rhythm & Blues
I was Country, when Country wasn't cool

I remember circlin' the drive-in pullin' up and turnin' down George Jones
I remember when no one was lookin' I was puttin' peanuts in my Coke
I took a lot of kiddin', 'cause I never did fit in now look at everybody tryin' to be what I was then
I was Country, when Country wasn't cool

I was Country, when Country wasnt cool
I was Country, from my hat down to my boots
I still act, and look the same what you see ain't nothin' new
I was Country, when Country wasn't cool

They call us "country bumpkins", for stickin' to our roots
I'm just glad we're in a country, where we're all free to choose
I was Country, when Country wasn't cool

I was Country, when Country wasnt cool
I was Country, from my hat down to my boots
I still act, and look the same what you see ain't nothin' new
I was Country, when Country wasn't cool

Yeah, I was Country when Country wasn't cool
