"Concrete Angel" is one of the most emotional and heartbreaking songs out there. It centers around the theme of child abuse and is definitely a tearjerker.

"Concrete Angel" was written by Stephanie Bentley and Rob Crosby and recorded and released by Martina McBride in 2002 on her Greatest Hits album. It reached #5 on US Hot Country Songs charts.

Though this song and music video center around child abuse, it also brings up the subject of bullying, as the young 7-year-old girl named Angela Carter is a victim of being teased on her way to school (in the official music video). Young Angela's bruises are continuously ignored, even by her teachers, and her appearance shows little care. The young girl eventually passes due to abuse, but she's finally free, happy, and loved in Heaven.

It's difficult to listen to this song without the onslaught of tears. Martina's performance in the video is exceptional and highly emotional. "Concrete Angel" rocks a person to the core and it's without a doubt one of Martina's best songs, as heart-wrenching as it is.

You can also check out Martina's performance of the same song during the Grammy's, but make sure to watch this amazing live version first! Check it out below.

LYRICS BELOW

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace, oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
Where she's loved concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear but they turn out the light
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it will be too late

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
Where she's loved concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
Where she's loved concrete angel
