With a father like Merle Haggard, we sort of assumed that his son Ben Haggard would be talented as well, and we were not let down! Ben Haggard is has a fantastic voice as well!

As tribute to his amazingly talented father, Ben covered his hit song, "Mama Tried". Ben's rendition of the song appeared on the 2014 album Working Man's Poet - A Tribute To Merle Haggard, which included covers by many talented artists, including Toby Keith, Jason Aldean, and Randy Housner.

Merle originally released "Mama Tried" in 1968 from his album also titled, Mama Tried. The song was a success, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and eventually became one of Merle's most well known songs. In 1999, "Mama Tried" won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award, which is won by songs that are at least twenty-five years old and still have "qualitative or historical significance". Well done Merle, you deserve it!

Ben Haggard does an amazing job bringing this song back to it's original glory. His father must be so proud!

Check out the video to hear Ben's rendition of his father's classic, "Mama Tried"!

++++++++++LYRICS BELOW++++++++++

The first thing I remember knowing
Was a lonesome whistle blowing
And a young'un's dream of growing up to ride
On a freight train leaving town
Not knowing where I'm bound
And no one could change my mind but Mama tried

One and only rebel child
From a family meek and mild
My mama seemed to know what lay in store
Despite all my Sunday learning
Towards the bad I kept on turning
Till Mama couldn't hold me anymore

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole
No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried

Dear old Daddy, rest his soul
Left my mom a heavy load
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes
Working hours without rest
Wanted me to have the best
She tried to raise me right but I refused

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole
No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried
