Conway Twitty is just so talented, and he never lets us down with his covers of classic songs! His cover of Merle Haggard's "Okie From Muskogee" is fantastic, and we think even Merle would be proud!

Originally released in 1969 off of Merle's album Okie From Muskogee, the song was a huge success and could arguably be the greatest song of his career! Later that same year, Conway decided to cover Merle's hit song, and released it on his album, To See My Angel Cry. Conway seemed to add some popularity to this song as well, and his version also hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Great job to both Merle and Conway!

The song is an Oklahoma pride anthem! "Okie" is a slang term for someone from Oklahoma, and Muskogee is a city in the state. The narrator says, "I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee," and goes on to say that he wouldn't want to be from anywhere else (especially California!).

Check out the video to hear Conway Twitty's rendition of Merle Haggard's hit song, "Okie From Muskogee", and you'll be glad you did!

+++++++++LYRICS BELOW+++++++++

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don't take no trips on LSD
We don't burn no draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin' right, and bein' free.

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

We don't make a party out of lovin';
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.
Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.
