Often referred to as 'the greatest country singer of all time', George Jones charted a career spanning 60 years and left a legacy that will forever cement his name in country music history.

Originally from Sartoga, Texas, Jones became a sensation in his early twenties with his first record "No Money In This Deal" launching in 1954. Jones then made his first Opry appearance in 1956 and that same year, tried his hand at "Rockabilly" music under the name Thumper Jones.

Over the course of his career, Jones would go on to record over 150 hits either as a solo artist or in a duet with other musicians. One of his most notable hits was "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Released in 1980 after marrying his fourth wife, it was the first No. 1 single from Jones in six years.

The sorrowful, timeless ballad has been preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry as of 2008.

In 2013, Jones was performing his farewell tour when he suddenly became ill near the middle of April. Just two weeks following a recent concert, he passed away from respiratory complications.

The video below is considered the last live performance recorded of Jones before he passed. It was filmed during a concert at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana on March 16th 2013.

RIP Possum.
