Tammy is also known as the 'First Lady of Country Music', and for good reason. Her most popular song, 'Stand by Your Man' was one of the best-selling hit singles by a woman in the history of country music. The only song to ever come close is Dolly Parton's classic '9 to 5'.
'Stand by Your Man' has been covered by both men and women throughout the years, and was placed at #48 (out of 300) on RIAA's list of Songs of the Century.
Many of Tammy's song focus on the theme of loneliness and the struggles women experience. There is no doubt Tammy certainly had a mysterious and dark existence and went through much personal suffering. She is greatly missed by many, and fortunately her music continues to live on in her memory.
Here is a video of her final Grand Ole Opry performance in 1997, singing her signature song 'Stand by Your Man'.
