In 2000, country star Randy Travis released the gospel track 'The Carpenter' on his 12th album, Inspirational Journey. The song features accompanying vocals from legend Waylon Jennings and late-wife Jessi Colter.

A lot of people may not realize that Jessi is one of very few female artists to emerge from the early 1970's 'outlaw' movement in music, of which Waylon was also affiliated. After meeting Waylon around this time she released an album and had a hit song called 'I'm Not Lisa'.

The outlaw movement was perhaps more brazen than 'The Carpenter', but it's interesting to hear her voice in a different light. Waylon naturally, does signature Waylon on this recording. And what's great is these three voices are so different, but they sound incredible together. This is a deeply touching song.

Inspirational Journey also features a duet with Kenny Chesney, 'Baptism', that showcases a heartfelt combination of two of country music's most talented singers.

LYRICS BELOW

'The Carpenter' (with Waylon Jennings & Jessi Colter)

He was just a carpenter by trade
He learned from his father at a very early age
There was something special in the man
There was much more to his life
Than just working with his hands.

And He'd say there's no home I could design
That would match the one you'd find
When you leave this world behind
If you only took the time.

Love your neighbour like your brother
Treat your brother like a friend
Always turn the other cheek
Help the weary and the weak
Make the time for young and old
And as your life unfolds
Each kindness that you've shown
Will be the nails and hammers
As you build your final ladder
In the manner of the carpenter of old.

You could feel compassion in his eyes
But, Only fools that hurt him did not realize
That he was speaking to us all
The righteous and the mighty
The silent and the small.

And He'd say there's no home I could design
That would match the one you'd find
When you leave this world behind
If you'd only take the time.

Love your neighbour like your brother
Treat your brother like a friend
Always turn the other cheek
Help the weary and the weak
Make the time for young and old
And as your life unfolds
Each kindness that you've shown
Will be the nails and hammers
As you build your final ladder
In the manner of the carpenter of old.

He was just a carpenter by trade
He learned from his father at a very early age...
