To earn the nickname "King of Country," you have to be able to back it up. And boy, does George Strait have the credentials! He not only has 60 number one singles, but he also has more number one songs than any artist in any genre! Selling more than 68 million albums in the United States, he has had 13 multi-platinum, 33 platinum, and 38 gold albums. With a career spanning over 30 years, this 63-year-old sure does not seem to be slowing down!
George Strait was born in Poteet, Texas on May 18, 1952. He started a rock n' roll band in high school and notes The Beatles as an early influence on his music career. He was turned onto country music because of live performances that could be heard anywhere in Texas. After eloping with his high school sweetheart, Norma, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he began playing with the US-Army sponsored band "Rambling Country." When he was honorably discharged in 1975, he went to school at Southwest Texas State University and graduated with a degree in agriculture.
Strait soon signed with MCA Records and started recording hit after hit. His first ever single, "Unwound" reached #3 on the charts. This was just the beginning for a long and entertaining career for the King. He even added 'actor' to his resume with films like Pure Country, The Soldier, and Grand Champion. In 2006, he was inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Even though he retired from touring in 2014, his country music career is still going strong!
Happy Birthday to the King of Country, George Strait, and enjoy videos of a couple of his best songs!
