Based in Athens, Georgia, but originally from The Shoals region of Northern Alabama, alternative country/Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers is Southern to the core. The group got their start in 1996, and after releasing two studio albums they came out with one that served as the ultimate tribute to Skynyrd.
Drive-By Truckers' 2001 release Southern Rock Opera tells the story of Skynyrd's history alongside events occurring in the South in the 1970s. Every song on the album is presented through the lens of Skynyrd's story, but unless you listened to the whole album you wouldn't exactly know that.
One song that only diehard fans would recognize as a nod to Skynyrd without being placed in the context of the album is a track called "Cassie's Brother." The song is Drive-By Truckers' own imagining of how guitarist Steve Gaines came to join the band, though the lyrics never mention him by name:
"Cassie's brother was an okie boy.
Played guitar just like a god."
