When Johnny Cash was just ten-years-old, his family had a traumatic loss that he ultimately carried with him for the rest of his life.

In May of 1944, Johnny's older brother, Jack Cash, was in a horrible accident while at a saw mill. Although he survived the accident, it took his life just a few days later. Due to Johnny's father's reaction to the tragic event, and the guilt he put on Johnny for being the surviving child, Johnny always felt some sense of responsibility for the incident, and carried that guilt with him throughout his life.

In 1996, Sting wrote the heart-wrenching song, "I Hung My Head". The song tells the story of a boy who accidentally took the life of his brother. The boy can't believe what he has done, and the guilt he feels is tremendous. He faces his consequences but never forgives himself for what he has done, and awaits the day the two will be reunited.

Johnny could really relate to this song and it's message, so he covered the song in 2002 and released it on his final album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. You can just hear the emotion and guilt in Johnny's voice as he sings the heartbreaking lyrics. We are so sorry for your loss, Johnny.

Check out the video below, and we're sure you'll feel some strong emotion as well.

R.I.P. Jack Cash.

LYRICS BELOW

Early one morning
With time to kill
I borrowed Jebb's rifle
And sat on the hill
I saw a lone rider
Crossing the plain
I drew a bead on him
To practise my aim

My brother's rifle
Went off in my hand
A shot rang out
Across the land
The horse, he kept running
The rider was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head

I set off running
To wake from the dream
My brother's rifle
Went into the sheen
I kept on running
Into the south lands
That's where they found me
My head in my hands

The sheriff he asked me
Why had I run
And then it came to me
Just what I had done
And all for no reason
Just one piece of lead
I hung my head
I hung my head

Here in the court house
The whole town was there
I see the judge
High up in his chair
"Explain to the court room
What went through your mind.
And we'll ask the jury
What verdict they find."

I felt the power
Of death over life
I orphaned his children
I widowed his wife
I begged their forgiveness
I wish I was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head

I hung my head
I hung my head

Early one morning
With time to kill
I see the gallows
Up on a hill
And out in the distance
A trick of the brain
I see a lone rider
Crossing the plain

And he'd come to fetch me
To see what they'd done
And we'd ride together
To kingdom come
I prayed for god's mercy
For soon I'd be dead
I hung my head
I hung my head

I hung my head
I hung my head
