There's just not much like a good ole Johnny and Willie performance. During a routine show, the two came together to sing the classic cowboy tune, "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend".
"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend" was written in 1948 by Stan Jones. Although there are many different names for the song, it's most commonly called "Riders in the Sky", and has been covered by an array of artists over the years. The Western Writers of America have chosen the song to be on their list of the "Top Western Songs of all Time" and we couldn't agree more!
The song tells the folk tale of a cowboy who claims to have seen, "A mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw / Plowin through the ragid skies and up a cloudy draw". The spirits of 'damned cowboys' ride the cattle, and warn the young cowboy to change his ways. They say, "If you wanna save your soul from hell a-ridin on our range / Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride / Tryin to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies". Ah! We hope he listened!
