Loretta Lynn Performs "Dear Uncle Sam" In Old Footage (Rare)

Early in Loretta Lynn's career, she released a song about the Vietnam War. It's one of the treasures from her earlier albums that is rarely given the credit that it deserves as being such a great song. That song is "Dear Uncle Sam". "Dear Uncle Sam" appeared on the album I Like 'Em Country in 1966 and was Loretta's fifth studio album. The song was never a single or all that popular, with songs like "Blue Kentucky Girl" and "You Ain't Woman Enough" doing much better off the album, but "Dear Uncle Sam" survives through the ages as a song that speaks to all military wives or family members will understand.

The performance was for a television show in the early 1970s and Loretta performs on her guitar and sings beautiful, her voice bringing chills to everyone who listens to the song. It's a classic tune, with the trademark twang sound that was typical of country music from the time.

Check out the video below.

Dear Uncle Sam
I know you're a busy man
And tonight, I write to you
Through tears with a trembling hand

My darling answered
When he got that call from you
You said you really need him
But you don't need him like I do

Don't misunderstand
I know he's fighting for our land
I really love my country
But I also love my man

He proudly wears the colors
Of the old red, white and blue
While I wear a heartache
Since he left me for you

Dear Uncle Sam
I just got your telegram
And I can't believe that this is me
Shaking like I am
For it said, "I'm sorry to inform you"
