This touching performance is one for the books. Lee Ann Womack performed for the people who were touched by literary legend Maya Angelou at her 2014 memorial service. The song meant a lot to Angelou, so it was only fitting that Womack perform in her honor.

"I Hope You Dance" was a crossover hit for Womack, recorded for her 2000 album of the same name. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and Adult Contemporary charts. It also reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has become one of Womack best known songs to date.

According to Oprah Winfrey, who was a dear friend of Angelou - she received a phone call from Angelou who told her "I Hope You Dance" made her think:

"If I had a daughter—and I feel that you are my daughter—those are the words I would want to say to my daughter."

Later, Womack performed the song on the Oprah show, only furthering the success of the heartwarming ballad.

On May 28, 2014, Maya Angelou passed away, still working on a new book and planning more public appearances. She was truly a legend in her own right.

Womack performed "I Hope You Dance" at Angelou's memorial service, and was honored that one of her songs touched such an influential woman

 LYRICS BELOW

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....I hope you dance.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin',
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin',
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin' out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along,
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

Dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance..
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone)
