It's a known rule that you don't mess with Texas. It's also a smart idea not to mess with a true Texas country boy.
One particular wannabe criminal learned that lesson the hard way when he attempted to rob a Midlothian, Texas gas station.
As shown in surveillance footage from the convenience store, firefighter and former active duty Marine Daniel Gaskey is standing at the counter when he is suddenly shoved aside by a masked man.
Gaskey appears confused at first, raising his hands in the air after the masked man shoved him aside. But when the man pulled out a knife and threatened the store clerk, Gaskey rushed to stop him.
Gaskey comes up behind the robber, wraps his arms around his neck, and throws him to the ground. Once Gaskey has complete control of the situation, he reaches forward and snatches the knife from the robber's hand. The masked man is no match for Gaskey, who keeps him restrained until police officers arrive on the scene.
The robber was later identified by police as 19-year-old Dylan Bearden.
In an interview for Task & Purpose, Gaskey said that he acted out of instinct when he saw Bearden pull out the knife. "I’ve always had a protective nature," he said. "I’ve always been someone who was willing to stand up for what’s right."
After this incident, it's probably safe to say that Bearden will never underestimate a hard-core country boy again.
