When it comes to this Dolly Parton classic, all it takes is the song's first word to know you're in for a treat.
In 1974, country music superstar, Dolly Parton, was featured on the television show, That Good Ole Nashville Music. Porter Wagoner gave Parton a warm welcome, introducing her as, "One of the prettiest, singing-est, song-writing-est blondes in country music coming up right now." A young Parton then took the stage and wowed the crowd with a spectacular performance of her hit song, "Jolene".
Released in 1973, "Jolene" quickly became one of Parton's signature songs. The song was both written and recorded by the country icon, and was released as the first single from her album of the same name.
The song about 'the other woman' was a huge success, becoming Parton's second single to reach #1 on the US Country Songs chart, following her 1970's #1, "Joshua".
But the success of "Jolene" didn't stop there. In 2004, the song was ranked at No. 219 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of all Time.
Parton considers "Jolene" to be one of her most covered songs. From country, to pop, to rock, artists from all musical genres have been known to sing Parton's passionate words.
