When country legend George Jones passed away, the country music world was overcome with grief.

The Grand Ole Opry chose to host a memorial service for Jones in his honor, which featured performances from various country music superstars. But out of all of the performances, Travis Tritt's sincere rendition of "Why Me Lord?" was one of the best.

"Why Me Lord?" was originally written and recorded by Kris Kristofferson under the title "Why Me?" It became the biggest hit of Kristofferson's career, resulting in many other artists producing their own version of the song.

One of these artists was Jones, who recorded his version of "Why Me Lord?" for his 1974 album In a Gospel Way.

When Tritt is introduced at Jones' memorial service the crowd responds with enthusiastic applause, but as soon as Tritt takes a seat on the stool in front of the microphone it is suddenly quiet enough to hear a pin drop

Before his performance, Tritt recalls a conversation he had with "Why Me Lord?" writer and performer, Kristofferson, about Jones and his wife, Nancy:

"Back in 1998, in the spring of that year, I found myself in Spain, on a movie set, with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, when the word came of the passing of Tammy Wynette. And of course we were all saddened by that news. And I was in a makeup trailer with Kris Kristofferson that morning when we got the word. And I looked at Kris, and I made the comment, 'you know, with all the years of hard living that George had, who would have ever thought that he'd outlive Tammy?' And Kris looked at me and said, 'had it not been for  Nancy, he would not have.'"

The crowd cheers in response to Tritt's story, and the camera pans to Nancy, who is trying to hold back her tears.

"George said it many times, 'she's my angel, and she saved my life.' And so we owe you a debt of gratitude for that," Tritt said to Nancy, prompting a standing ovation from Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.

"In thinking about that conversation, this song came to mind," Tritt said, before he started his performance of "Why Me Lord?"

The crowd claps for Tritt after he sings just a few words, making it clear that they already enjoy his rendition of Jones' song.

Tritt proceeds to deliver an emotional, acoustic performance, as a single spotlight shines down on him

As Tritt sings the song's final line "Jesus, my soul's in your hands," his voice is so soft that he's almost whispering. Once he's done performing, Tritt quietly walks off stage, leaving the last words of "Why Me Lord?" hanging in the audience's ears.

After watching this incredible tribute to Jones,  it's clear that a powerful song like "Why Me Lord?" and Tritt's soulful voice are the perfect combination.

LYRICS BELOW

Why me Lord?

What have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I've known

Tell me Lord.

What did I ever do
That was worth loving you
Or the kindness you've shown.

Lord, help me Jesus,
I've wasted it
So help me Jesus
I know what I am.
Now that I know
That I've needed you
So help me Jesus,
My soul's in your hands.

Why me Lord?

If you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you

Maybe Lord.

I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you.

Lord, help me Jesus,
I've wasted it
So help me Jesus
I know what I am.
Now that I know
That I've needed you
So help me Jesus,
My soul's in your hands.

Lord, help me Jesus,
I've wasted it
So help me Jesus
I know what I am
Now that I know
That I've need you
So help me Jesus,
My soul's in your hands.

Jesus, my soul's in your hands...
