When Marty Stuart was invited to join Johnny Cash's backup band in 1980, it was the start of the his career, but also the start of a life-long friendship.

Stuart went on to accompany Cash to Memphis to record Cash's Class of '55 album. The bond between Stuart and Cash was strengthened further when Stuart married Cash's daughter Cindy, though the couple eventually divorced.

As the years went on and Stuart began to experience success on his own, he still remembered his best friend.

Stuart ended up covering a version of Cash's song "Cry! Cry! Cry!" and also joined Cash on stage once for a live performance of his song, "Doing My Time."

When Cash passed away in 2003, Stuart was understandably devastated. He decided to pay tribute to his friend in the best way he knew possible...by writing a song.

Stuart's tribute song to Cash, called "Dark Bird," was released on a CD along with Stuart's book Country Music: The Masters, which according to Amazon, is "a photographic love letter to the founders and legends of country music."

The song's official music video is nothing less than heart-wrenching, as Stuart sings sorrowfully into the microphone with tears in his eyes.

Set in black and white, the video also features several pictures of Stuart and Cash together, showing how strong their connection was.

In the middle of the video, the song stops, while Stuart walks up next to an area filled with beautiful, flowering trees. He explains that Cash had planted the trees in the orchard before he died, and then after he passed away, Stuart bought the place.

It was there that Stuart saw a black crow sitting in one of the trees, and that's how he got the inspiration for "Dark Bird."

Watch the emotional music video for Stuart's "Dark Bird" below.

We're sure that Cash would be proud of his friend for writing such a touching tribute.

LYRICS BELOW

On a cool September mornin', in the fall of 2'03,

A crier from Jerusalem brought the news to me.

His words were sharp and dreaded, and they made a lonesome sound,

And they snapped my heart in two, like a stick stepped on the ground.

And I cried and cried and cried, at the cutting of the pain,

And quietly said goodbye, so long in Jesus' name.

Dark bird, watch you fly,

Dark bird, to another sky.

And I'll bet you were a sight, when you hit that cloud of love,

And flew out the other side, in the form of a dove.

Dark bird, dark bird.

Six feet one and a box of steel, in a pretty coat of black,

Well I watched the world, watch themselves, watch your final act.

And I couldn't help but notice, when they laid you in the earth,

A train went by, headed north, for whatever it is worth.

Your voice echoes in the wind, it rumbles through the trees,

But after you've been everywhere, I guess it's time to leave.

Dark bird, watch you fly,

Dark bird, to another sky.

And I'll bet you were a sight, when you hit that cloud of love,

And flew out the other side, in the form of a dove.

Dark bird, dark bird.

Dark bird.
