When Love and Theft released their single "Whiskey On My Breath", they were coming from the heart.

The song, which features Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson's chilling harmonies, is a story of an alcoholic confronting his addiction.

The video for the heart-wrenching song, features lyrics like, “Oh, I know I’m going to heaven / But I can’t go with me like this / I need to pull myself together / Before then / No, I ain’t afraid of dying / But what scares me to death / Is meeting Jesus / With whiskey on my breath,” and shows a man struggling with his alcoholism, before finding the strength to become sober for his little girl.

For Liles and Gunderson, this song is extremely personal.

"I come from a family of alcoholics," Gunderson, told PEOPLE magazine. "I've had grandparents and great-grandparents die from alcoholism, and Stephen's grandfather pretty much drank himself to death. He had a case of Crown sitting next to his bed, woke up every day and drank until he passed out."

The song was inspired by Gunderson's own wake-up call. He quit drinking in January and has vowed to stay healthy.

"In the industry we're in, it's pretty easy to find yourself drinking every night," he explains. He also explains how his Type 1 Diabetes makes drinking all the more dangerous. "I decided to be sober," he said. "It's been a life-changing decision."

Gunderson also wants to stay healthy for his 2-year-old son, Camden, and reveals the decision to not drink has already had profound changes in his family life.

"You don't wake up hungover, you don't make bad decisions as often, and you have a level of clarity. Everything seems to come easier – songwriting has improved and our musical performances have gotten better. It's created a different kind of productivity in my life."

The song's message is a powerful one which a lot of people can relate to.

Lyrics Below

I woke up with a pounding head
With a bottle laying in the bed
There was a little, a little bit left
So I picked it up and I killed the rest

Oh I know I'm going to heaven
But I can't go with me like this
I need to pull myself together
Before then
No and I ain't afraid of dying
But what scares me to death
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath.

I lost her and all my friends
Broke all but one of my Lord's 10
But Jesus died for all my sins
That's how I know I'm getting in

Oh I know I'm going to heaven
But I can't go with me like this
I need to pull myself together
Before then
No and I ain't afraid of dying
But what scares me to death
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath

Oh I know I'm going to heaven
But I can't go with me like this
I need to pull myself together
Before then
No and I ain't afraid of dying
But what scares me to death
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath
