After a career spanning almost half a century, the legendary musician, songwriter, and producer Allen Toussaint has passed away.

Toussaint was on tour in Madrid, when he passed away from a heart attack on Monday, November 9.

Even though Toussaint was an R&B artist himself, artists in almost every genre recorded the songs he wrote and collaborated with him.

"I don't want y'all thinkin' 'this is just some old legend that passed away' naw," said Questlove, the drummer and frontman of TV host Jimmy Fallon's band The Roots. "This dude wrote some of your favorite music & you just didn't know it."

One of those songs includes "Southern Nights" which Toussiant wrote for country music legend, Glen Campbell.

"Southern Nights" was released as the first single from Campbell's 1977 album of the same name. The song was an instant hit, soaring to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.

Toussaint was inspired to write the song based on his memories of visiting relatives that lived in the backwoods of Louisiana.

As soon as Campbell heard the song he knew he wanted to record it, since he could identify with it due to his own Southern upbringing in Arkansas.

Sometimes Toussaint would perform "Southern Nights" at his own shows throughout the years. You can see one of those performances in the video below, and while you're at it, listen to Campbell's recording of the song as well.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Toussaint's family during this sad time.

LYRICS BELOW

Southern nights
Have you ever felt a southern night
Free as a breeze
Not to mention the trees
Whistling tunes that you know and love so
Southern nights
Just as good even when closed your eyes
I apologize
To any one who can truly say
That he's found a better way

Southern skies
Have you ever noticed
Southersn skies
It's precious beauty
Lies just beyone the eye
It goes running through the soul
Like the stories told of old

Old man
He and his dog that walk the old land
Every flower touched his cold hand
As he slowly walked by
Weeping willows would cry for joy

Joy

Feels so good
Feels so good it's frightening
Wish I could
Stop this world from fighting
La-da-da-da-da, da-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da

Mystery
Like this and many others
In the trees
Blow in the night
In the southern skies

Southern nights
They feel so good it's frightening
Wish I could
Stop this world from fighting
La-da-da-da-da, da-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da
