While on a holiday tour for his first Christmas album in 17 years, Kenny Rogers sits down with The Chronicle Herald for an interview about his final shows.

Bringing his latest Once Again It's Christmas album and tour of the same name to Canada, Rogers takes a break just before his Maritimes performances to reflect on his 77 years of life and his incredible successes as a musician.

Rogers opened up about the reasons behind retiring and why right now was the perfect time.

“In four years I’ll be 81 years old, and I don’t like my chances with touring. I think it’s a chance to retire with dignity, and I’m trying to do that. I have identical twin boys who are 11 years old, and in my autobiography I wrote that there’s a fine line between being driven and being selfish."

“I think when I was younger, I was selfish, and I chose success over my family, and I think I paid a price for that. I’m determined not to do that. I have a bucket list for my boys, and I want to make sure I get it done.”

Since beginning his career as a performer in the late '50s, Rogers admits that the constant touring and performing has had an effect on him over the years. With a career spanning over five decades, Rogers has amassed a large number of achievements.

“One of the things that got me thinking about retiring was the fact that I’d done everything I’d set out to do and more than I ever thought I would do. Getting into the (Country Music) Hall of Fame was kind of the clincher for me. It was something I wanted to accomplish, and it took me a long time to do that, but I told my boys it’s not when you get in but that you get in."

Even after all these years, records, and accolades, Rogers is on the road set out to close his career with a bang. His latest album Once Again It's Christmas, takes on classic holiday favorites and a number of newer cheery tracks too!

“There were certain people I wanted to record with, and it was important to me to do it. Like this a cappella group Home Free, I found them coincidentally and accidentally, but they brought such a different dimension in sound to the record. I’m just glad I got the chance to do that, on "Children Go Where I Send Thee".

Check out Kenny Rogers & Home Free singing "Children Go Where I Send Thee" from his new record in the video below!

LYRICS BELOW

Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee one by one
One for the little bitty, baby
Wrapped in swaddling clothing, lying in a manger
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem

Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee two by two
Two for Paul and Silas
One for the little bitty, baby
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem

Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee three by three

Three for the Hebrew children
Two for Paul and Silas
One for the little bitty, baby
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem

Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
Well, I'm gonna send thee four by four
Four for the four that stood at the door

Three for the Hebrew children
Two for Paul and Silas
One for the little bitty, baby
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem, yeah

Born, born, born, born, born
Born, born, born, born
He was born, born, born, born, born
Born, born, born, born

Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee ten by ten
Ten for the ten commandments

Nine for the nine who saw the signs
Eight for the eight that stood at the gate
Seven for the seven that went up to heaven
Six for the six that never got fixed

Five for the gospel preachers
Four for the four that stood at the door
Three for the Hebrew children
Two for Paul and Silas

One for the little bitty, baby, oh
Yes, He was born, born
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem

He was born, He was born
He was born, He was born
Yes, He was, He was born
He was born

I said, He was born, He was born
He was born, oh, oh, oh, yeah
He was born, He was born
He was born

He was born, He was born
He was born, He was
He was born, He was born
He was
