Fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd know the tragedy that surrounds the band.

In 1977 following a performance in Greenville, South Carolina, the band boarded a plane headed for Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The pilots informed everyone on board they had to make an emergency landing due to a faulty engine.

The plane crashed into a heavily forested area and band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick were killed. Other band members sustained serious injuries.

The band took a hiatus starting immediately after the plane crash. They reunited in 1987 for a full-scale tour and included Ronnie's younger brother, Johnny, as the new lead singer.

Since Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited, every time they perform their song "Simple Man", it is always dedicated to the late Ronnie Van Zant. In this particular performance of "Simple Man" at their tour stop in Nashville, Tennessee, a slideshow plays and shows photos and videos of the band pre-crash and Ronnie in his younger years.

Normally this song is extremely powerful because of what the band has been through, but what makes this performance even more powerful, is the fact that Ronnie's younger brother is singing lead vocals.

"Simple Man" is Lynyrd Skynyrd's third best-selling digital song after "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". It was included on their debut album in 1973.

Lyrics Below

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Boy, don't you worry.
You'll find yourself.
Follow your heart,
And nothing else.
You can do this,
If you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Baby, be a simple, be a simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
