When John Lennon wrote "Imagine", do you think he expected it to be relevant nearly three decades later?
Even though the tune is a pop classic, it has transcended time and genres, finally making it to the country music arena. Many have covered the song, but there is something about Willie Nelson on the vocals that just makes sense. When you hear his stunning rendition of "Imagine" you'll understand why.
Lennon wrote and recorded "Imagine" in 1971 in an effort to paint a picture of peace in the world. The tune became the best selling single of his solo career without The Beatles. The lyrics challenge us to focus on what is really important in life, and to imagine a world without hate, greed, or war.
The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and #1 in several other countries. The serene melody and beautiful lyrics shed light on some of the bigger issues people face in the world. The most amazing thing about it is that its meaning is still relevant in today's world and most likely always will be. It truly has stood the test of time!
Nelson recorded the song in 2007 for a compilation album to benefit Amnesty International's campaign to help the War in Darfur. The album featured a wide range of artists from Christina Aguilera to Aerosmith, and Nelson on the bonus track edition. The artists covered Lennon's songs and all proceeds went to alleviating the crisis.
Listen to Nelson's cover of "Imagine" below. We can't imagine a more fitting artists to sing the meaningful song.
