Everybody knows Chris Stapleton's name after watching this year's CMAs. He took home the Album of the Year, New Artist of the Year, and Male Vocalist of the Year awards, something that has never been done before.
If you were shocked while watching the awards show, you weren't alone! Stapleton himself couldn't believe it!
"After winning the third award for Male Vocalist of the Year, I was waiting for a Candid Camera moment or thought maybe I was getting Punk’d," he told Country Weekly. "I was waiting for it to be some sort of national television prank."
He really did think someone was pranking him! It was definitely a "pinch me" moment for Stapleton, who first moved to Nashville to pursue a music career in 2001. After his CMA domination and show-stealing performance with Justin Timberlake, Stapleton's May debut album, Traveller, started selling like crazy and his single, "Tennessee Whiskey", became the best-selling digital country song of the week.
“It didn’t seem like a real thing." Stapleton continued. "Sometimes you get to do stuff in this business that when you say it out loud—like playing with Justin on the show—it sounds fake. The whole night sounds like a fake occurrence, something that couldn’t possibly happen for someone in my position. But it did, and we’re overly thankful and overjoyed right now. If there was ever a perfect night in a career, that was one. What a crazy, wonderful, exciting night."
And a crazy, wonderful, exciting night it was. His peers even took time out of their acceptance speeches to praise Stapleton, and Miranda Lambert rocked a Chris Stapleton t-shirt!
