Last night, Luke Bryan was named one of the CMT Artists of the Year. A year earlier, he cancelled his appearance due to the death of his brother-in-law, Lee Cheshire.

Cheshire was married to Luke's sister Kelly, who tragically passed away in 2007. After Cheshire's passing, Luke and his wife took in Kelly and Lee'sĀ 13-year-old son, Til.

Before the CMT awards show, Luke spoke with an Entertainment Tonight reporter about the one-year anniversary of hisĀ brother-in-law's passing.

"It's certainly been on my mind today," he said. "It's kind of that time of year, but I take from that night just how supportive country music artists are."

The entire country music genre was supporting him and sent him prayers, but he is especially talking about Lady Antebellum and Chris Stapleton. They stepped in for Luke last year and performed his hit, "Drink A Beer". Stapleton, who wrote "Drink A Beer", was honored last night as the first ever Breakout Artist of the Year.

Watch Lady Antebellum and Chris Stapleton's emotional performance of Drink A Beer below.

Lyrics Below

When I got the news today
I didn't know what to say.
So I just hung up the phone.

I took a walk to clear my head,
This is where the walking led
Can't believe you're really gone
Don't feel like going home

So I'm gonna sit right here
On the edge of this pier
Watch the sunset disappear
And drink a beer

Funny how the good ones go
Too soon, but the good Lord knows
The reasons why, I guess

Sometimes the greater plan
Is kinda hard to understand
Right now it don't make sense
I can't make it all make sense

So I'm gonna sit right here
On the edge of this pier
Watch the sunset disappear
And drink a beer

So long my friend
Until we meet again
I'll remember you
And all the times that we used to...

... sit right here on the edge of this pier
And watch the sunset disappear
And drink a beer
Drink a beer,
Drink a beer.
Yeah
