Fans of George Strait know him as the King of Country, his 80+ Top Ten hits, and extremely successful career that began in 1976.
Someone has been by his side his entire career--since before his career even started!
That special someone is his wife, Norma. The adorable couple was married in Mexico on December 4th, 1971 and have been in wedded bliss ever since.
Their union didn't start out so great, though! After their first date, George and Norma didn't see each other for a very long time.
"Norma was the first girl I ever loved. We knew each other forever, growing up in a small town. I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn’t see each other for a long time after that. Then one day, I thought, ‘I’m missing the boat here,’ and we started dating again."
Right after they got married, George enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Hawaii. There, he formed the band Rambling Country, and eventually became the solo artist we know today.
He spoke to People a few years ago about the secret to their long-lasting relationship.
"We love each other and we still like each other," he said. "We're so blessed that we were able to experience life together, to support each other through everything, good times and bad."
One of George's many Number 1 hit singles, "I Cross My Heart" from his movie Pure Country speaks about unconditional love, which is exactly what George and Norma have. We can imagine them slow dancing to it right now...
Listen to the song below.
Our love is unconditional, we knew it from the start.
I see it in your eyes, you can feel it from my heart.
From here on after let's stay the way we are right now,
And share all the love and laughter that a lifetime will allow.
I cross my heart and promise to
Give all I've got to give to make all your dreams come true.
In all the world you'll never find a love as true as mine.
You will always be the miracle that makes my life complete,
And as long as there's a breath in me, I'll make yours just as sweet.
As we look into the future, it's as far as we can see,
So let's make each tomorrow be the best that it can be.
And if along the way we find a day it starts to storm,
You've got the promise of my love to keep you warm.
In all the world you'll never find a love as true as mine,
A love as true as mine.
