The legendary southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd was at the peak of their career in 1977 when they released their fifth studio album, Street Survivors, featuring the opening track "What's Your Name."

"What's Your Name" was a major success in the U.S., peaking at the 13th spot on the Billboard Top 100. The song also went on to become a huge hit in Canada, breaking into the top ten to claim the sixth spot on the RPM Top Singles chart.

Two of Lynyrd Skynyrd's founding members, lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Gary Rossington co-wrote the song together.

The song is based on a true story, inspired by a time one of the band's roadies got into a fight while the group was drinking in their hotel bar on tour. Even though the band got kicked out of the bar, they made the best out of the situation and went to another room to "have a drink of champagne."

"What's Your Name" hadn't even been released yet when the band chose to perform it during a concert on July 13, 1977 at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

The performance was one of Van Zant's last, just months before the infamous plane crash on October 20, 1977 that claimed his life, along with the lives of his fellow bandmates Steve and Cassie Gaines.

Following the crash, Street Survivors claimed the fifth spot on the U.S. albums chart, and that's when "What's Your Name" started its climb up the charts as well.

LYRICS BELOW

Well, its eight o'clock in Boise, Idaho
I'll find my limo driver
Mister, take us to the show
I done made some plans for later on tonight
I'll find a little queen
And I know I can treat her right

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same?

Back at the hotel
Lord we got such a mess
It seems that one of the crew
Had a go with one of the guests, oh yes
Well, the police said we can't drink in the bar, what a shame
Won't you come upstairs girl
And have a drink of champagne

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
For there ain't no shame

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same? Awh yeah

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same?

Nine o'clock the next day
And I'm ready to go
I got six hundred miles to ride
To do one more show, oh no
Can I get you a taxi home
It sure was grand
When I come back here next year
I want to see you again

What was your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Well there ain't no shame
What was your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same? Woo
