In 1991, John Denver enlisted the help of fellow country stars for his Christmas special Montana Christmas Skies.
The TV special included performances from Clint Black, Kathy Mattea, and Patty Loveless. They all joined voices and performed a beautiful rendition of the beloved Christmas classic, "Away In A Manger".
They sat on bales of hay surrounded by the same barn animals that may have been there the night Jesus was born, including a donkey. Their version of the song is very simple, yet elegant.
Accompanied just by guitars and a recorder, you can easily hear the beautiful harmonies. There's no surprise why this performance is so incredible. Every person involved with the performance is a renowned country musician.
"Away In A Manger" dates back to the late nineteenth century and is considered one of the most beloved Christmas carols.
Watch the incredible performance below.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there
