Country superstar George Strait gives a stunning performance of a legend's timeless hit during this tribute to Merle Haggard

Back in 1991, the 18th American Music Awards got three of the top country performers together to pay tribute to a man whose music had influenced generations of artists. By this time, Haggard's career had spanned over a quarter century and he had released nearly 40 studio albums.

With such an expansive career and strong hand in shaping country music, there's no doubt as to why the AMAs decided to honor this already-legendary singer with a tribute.

On December 22, 1973, Haggard's crossover hit "If We Make It Through December" struck the No. 1 chart position making it a soaring success in both country and pop genres. Strait sings a cover of this immensely popular song that was written just the prior year by Haggard and exclaims about the desperate optimism that most blue-collar men faced during hard-economic times, most commonly December.

Strait, himself, has now become a country legend in his own right and is often referred to as "The King of Country" in many circles. Both he and Haggard have shaped country music as a whole and are regularly cited as influences by today's performers.

Watch this amazing performance of George Strait singing a tribute to Merle Haggard in the video below.

LYRICS BELOW

If we make it through December
Everything's gonna be all right I know
It's the coldest time of winter
And I shiver when I see the falling snow

If we make it through December
Got plans to be in a warmer town
Come summer time
Maybe even California

If we make it through December
We'll be fine

Got laid off down at the factory
And their timing's not the greatest
In the world
Heaven knows I've been working hard

Wanted Christmas to be right
For daddy's girl
I don't mean to hate December
It's meant to be the happy time of year

And my little girl don't understand
Why daddy can't afford no Christmas here
