Love and Theft have never shied away from addressing the tough subjects in their songs, including alcoholism and addiction. The topic was at the center of their 2012 song, "Town Drunk," which tells the story of a girl who escaped from her alcoholic father and went on to find true love.

Now, in their latest single "Whiskey On My Breath," the duo once again addresses the heartbreak of addiction. Released in 2014, "Whiskey On My Breath" peaked at the 50th spot on the Billboard US Country Airplay chart.

The song's lyrics tell the story of someone dealing with an intense personal conflict. He knows he can't change the fact that he's an alcoholic, but yet doesn't want to embarrass himself in front of Jesus when he goes to heaven.

As the song reveals, the narrator isn't afraid of death, saying instead that "But what scares me to death/Is meeting Jesus/With whiskey on my breath."

Love and Theft's Stephen Barker Liles explained the story behind "Whiskey On My Breath" in an interview with Rolling Stone Country:

"His mindset is he knows he's going to die one day, but even though he lost everything on this Earth, he's not going to give up liquor. It's that inner battle that an alcoholic faces. And it never resolves. It shows the darkness of being alone."

In February 2015, the duo posted a video of them performing the song live. The video is simple, and shot in black and white, giving the performance an intimate and personal feeling.

You can watch Love and Theft's live performance of "Whiskey On My Breath" in the video below.

The lyrics to the song alone are chilling, but when Stephen & Eric harmonize together on the chorus, it will truly send shivers up your spine.

LYRICS BELOW

I woke up with a pounding head
With a bottle laying in the bed
There was a little, a little bit left
So I picked it up and I killed the rest

Oh I know I'm going to heaven
But I can't go with me like this
I need to pull myself together
Before then
No and I ain't afraid of dying
But what scares me to death
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath.

I lost her and all my friends
Broke all but one of my Lord's 10
But Jesus died for all my sins
That's how I know I'm getting in

Oh I know I'm going to heaven
But I can't go with me like this
I need to pull myself together
Before then
No and I ain't afraid of dying
But what scares me to death
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath

Oh I know I'm going to heaven
But I can't go with me like this
I need to pull myself together
Before then
No and I ain't afraid of dying
But what scares me to death
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath
Is meeting Jesus
With whiskey on my breath
