From over a decade of performances and over a dozen talented winners, the longstanding host opens up about who has become the top ranking artist.
The search for a superstar began in the early 2000's, with the idea to find a new solo recording artist with the winner being elected by American viewers. Since its first season closed out with winner Kelly Clarkson in September 2002, and has churned out a number of supersonic artists.
Among the contestants that have charged forward with their singing careers, Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Jordin Sparks, Scotty McCreery, and Lauren Alaina are among some of the successful acts to come from the show.
In his interview, Seacrest is asked about his role as the host and who he thinks the biggest star to come from 'Idol' is.
"You don't have to be diplomatic...In your opinion, who is the biggest star to come out of the show?", Matt Lauer asks Seacrest.
Without missing a beat, he shoots back, "Carrie Underwood".
When another one of the Today hosts brings up Kelly Clarkson, he stands by his choice.
"Kelly too, but, you know, I was just on New Year's with Carrie and she's just a superstar. She really is. So I take Carrie."
With the 15th and final season fast approaching, the possibility is that a new artist may take over the top spot in Seacrest's eyes...but he seems steadfast in his choice.
The "Farewell Season" will begin airing on January 7th 2016, and filming will conclude in May. The familiar host admits that he's gonna be sad to see the show go.
“I can’t imagine life without going on the auditions every summer, and then doing the shows, you know, for months afterwards."
