Living in Tuscon, Arizona, Brook Sample made her singing debut with an audition using a country chart-topper from nearly two decades ago.

"Cold Day In July" was the Dixie Chicks' second single in 2000, and shot straight to the top of the country charts, peaking at No. 10 in the U.S. and No. 7 in Canada. Although they have acheived the most success with the song, it was first recorded in 1992 by two other country artists, Suzy Bogguss & Joy Lynn White.

As Sample walked into the American Idol judge's room, you could tell her nerves were getting the best of her and admits to the judges that she's been working as a waitress, but is sick and tired of of going home "smelling like ranch".

Blessed with a genuine presence and great smile, Sample began her audition accompanied by the piano. The minute she began to sing, the nerves seemed to disappear as she took command of the song and stunned the judges with her voice.

All of the judges loved her performance and so will you!

LYRICS BELOW

The moon is full but my arms are empty
All night long how I've pleaded and cried
You always said the day that you would leave me
Would be a cold day in July

Your bags are packed and not a word is spoken
Guess we said everything with goodbye
Time moves so slow when promises get broken
On this cold day in July

Sun's comin' up, comin' up down on Main Street
Children shout as they're running out to play
Head in my hands here I am standing in my bare feet
Watching you drive away
Watching you drive away

You said that we were gonna last forever
You said our love would never die
Looks like spring and feels like sunny weather
But it's a cold day in July

Oh, sun's comin' up, comin' up down on Main Street
Children shout as they're running out to play
Oh oh, head in my hands here I am standing in my bare feet
Watching you drive away
Watching you drive away

The moon is full but my arms are empty
All night long how I've pleaded and cried
You always said the day that you would leave me
Would be a cold day in July
Here comes that cold day in July
