It's hard to believe that the song "Midnight Rider" didn't claim a spot on the charts when it was first released in 1971. Today, it seems that almost everyone has heard the now-iconic song at least once in their lives.

In promotion of the DVD called All My Friends - Celebrating The Songs And Voice of Gregg Allman, Vince Gill, Zac Brown, and Allman came together to perform their own rendition of "Midnight Rider," which Allman co-wrote.

When Allman wrote the song he was a member of the band called the Allman Brothers Band.  He started working on the song in a rented cabin in Georgia and later called on roadie Robert Kim Payne to help him finish the lyrics.

The song was released as a single off of the Allman Brothers Band's album Idlewild South, but never found its way onto the charts.

Future versions of the song experienced greater chart success. Allman went on to release a solo version of the song in 1973, which ended up peaking at the 19th spot on the Billboard Hot 100. But it was actually Willie Nelson who turned the song into a Top 10 hit, when his 1980 version claimed the sixth spot on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

In honor of Allman's iconic song, Gill and Brown joined him in an electrifying performance featuring an abundance of instrumental solos. Gill especially shines in the performance with his minute-long guitar solo toward the end.

Allman and Brown take turns singing the lead part of the song, while Gill provides the harmony parts. Following the conclusion of the song, the crowd erupts into a round of thunderous cheers and applause, which were definitely well-earned by the three performers.

You can watch Gill, Brown, and Allman showcase their unbelievable talents in their performance of "Midnight Rider" below.

We have a feeling if these three ever released their version of the song as a single, it would be an instant hit!

LYRICS BELOW

Well, I've got to run to keep from hidin',
And I'm bound to keep on ridin'.
And I've got one more silver dollar,
But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no,
Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider.

And I don't own the clothes I'm wearing,
And the road goes on forever,
And I've got one more silver dollar,
But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider.

And I've gone by the point of caring,
Some old bed I'll soon be sharing,
And I've got one more silver dollar,

But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider.

No, I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider.

No, I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider.
