It isn't easy to sing a Garth Brooks song. In fact, it takes a lot of courage to take on an iconic ballad like "The Dance" and we appreciate that!

John Wayne Schulz is no stranger to American Idol. He first auditioned for the show during season 10, and made it through. However, he went head to head with Scotty McCreery during the "Final Judgement" round and had to pack his bags.

Sadly, Schulz went home and faced some devastating family news. His mother's breast cancer had returned, and he only had a few months left with her after the show. As disappointed as he was to leave American Idol, he was grateful to be home with his mom and family in those last months.

Naturally he wanted to come back again for a second shot at making his mom proud. What better way than to return for the final season?!

The judges recognized Schulz, and were blown away by his rendition of "The Dance". The 1990 hit has become one of the Brooks' most iconic songs, and we can't think of a better way to make a second impression!

Watch Schulz's performance of "The Dance" below.

LYRICS BELOW

Looking back
On the memory of
The dance we shared
'Neath the stars above
For a moment
All the world was right
How could I have known
That you'd ever say goodbye

And now
I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go
Our lives
Are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss
The dance

Holding you
I held everything
For a moment
Wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known
How the king would fall
Hey who's to say
You know I might have changed it all

And now
I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go
Our lives
Are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss
The dance
