In 1984, this American country artist released a single that would make history in more than one way...

At the end of President Ronald Reagan's final term, Lee Greenwood was asked to perform his phenomenal hit, "God Bless The U.S.A." for the massive audience in attendance.

Just four years after Greenwood's hit was played for the 1984 Republican National Convention, President Reagan invited him to sing it live for the 1988 Republican National Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Greenwood penned the patriotic anthem after realizing he needed to finally write a song about America. He previously has said that he "wanted to write it [his] whole life".

The song was originally released in May 1984 and peaked at the No. 7 position on Billboard's US Country Song chart. Following the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, the song was remastered and re-released. The song has seen a rise in popularity with each American victory against terrorism in the years that have passed signifying that it is now embedded in American Patriotism and culture.

Watch this amazing performance of "God Bless The U.S.A." in the video below.

LYRICS BELOW

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife

I thank my lucky stars
To be living here today
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can't take that away

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota
To the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas
From sea to shining sea

From Detroit down to Houston
And New York to L.A.
Where's pride in every American heart
And it's time we stand and say

That I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
