When Tammy Van Zant was 10 years old, she had already suffered great sadness and tragedy in her life. As the oldest daughter of Lynyrd Skynyrd's legendary lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, Tammy's world fell apart one fateful day in October.

On October 20, 1977, the plane carrying Ronnie and his Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmates crashed on the way to a concert in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Six people died in the crash, including Ronnie and his bandmates Steve and Cassie Gaines.

When Ronnie died, Tammy was bombarded by the news reports about his death, and instantly found herself feeling lost without her dad. According to Tammy's website, freebirdchild.com, it would take years for her to find herself again after Ronnie's death.

Tammy credits her faith as the one thing that saved her and helped her through all her heartache. She eventually grew stronger, and managed to find happiness again through the thing that also brought great joy to her dad...music.

Prior to the release of her album Freebird Child, Tammy was not a singer or songwriter, and had never even recorded a single song before. But her producer and co-writer Robert White Johnson said that songwriting came naturally to her, especially when she wrote the album's title track, "Freebird Child":

"Tammy poured out her heart lyrically as it’s a biographical mirror of her own life… the tragedies as well the love she feels each time she thinks of her Dad/rock icon, Ronnie. Ultimately, the song speaks of eternal hope to everyone…"

In the song, Tammy fondly remembers her dad, saying she "thought those days would last forever." She then sings about how she sometimes hears Ronnie's voice saying, "live to dream my Freebird Child."

Tammy also released a video for the song, showing her in the recording studio singing. The video also includes many cute snapshots of her and Ronnie together, showing just how strong their bond truly was.

You can watch Tammy's video for "Freebird Child" below.

We admire Tammy's strength and her determination to help her father's legacy live on in her music. May you rest in peace Ronnie, you're so dearly missed.

LYRICS BELOW

Every moment I remember
Thought those days would last
forever
Then one night my strength fell from the sky

I can hear your voice beside me
I know it's there to lead and guide me
Give everything just to see you one more time.

Where you goin' Freebird Child?
Riding on the southwind over magnolias growing wild
Trying to find your place to land among the stars
Live to dream my Freebird Child

So many nights so cold and lonely
Sometimes I dream that you still hold me
I loved it when you sang for me my song

Through the years, the words the music
Life's so torn and so confusing
I know your heart, your love in me lives on

Where you goin' Freebird Child?
Riding on the southwind over magnolias growing wild
Trying to find your place to land among the stars
Live to dream my Freebird Child

Where you goin' Freebird Child?
Riding on the southwind over magnolias growing wild
Trying to find your place to land among the stars
Live to dream my Freebird Child
I'll always be your Freebird Child

Fly so free . . . Keep the dream
